A capsule wardrobe is not a personality. It is a decision you make once so you do not make it every morning.
The internet version usually includes 40 items, a mood board, and a man who owns boat shoes in 2026. Ours is smaller. It assumes you go to an office some days, and you do not want your closet to require a curator.
How we picked
This is a system, not a ranking of sneakers. We looked at leather you can wipe, merino that layers, and a belt with a listed hide — construction, care, and whether the piece still makes sense next year. Typical US listings. Not a wear-test diary. Last reviewed: August 28, 2026.
Buy this closet if you want to get dressed in four minutes. Skip it if you like a big rotation, or if your job is actually finance theater and the shoe has to be a cap-toe.
The rule
If it does not go with navy, white, brown, and denim, it is a statement. Statements are allowed in moderation. They are not the closet.
Build around:
- Two pairs of trousers (navy chinos, dark denim)
- Two Oxford or oxford-adjacent shirts (white, light blue)
- One merino crew
- One unstructured blazer in navy
- White leather sneakers and one brown leather shoe
- One belt that matches the brown shoes
That is already 80% of a calendar year. Outerwear is climate-specific; we will not pretend a peacoat is a national uniform.
Sneakers: white leather, not “designer dad”
White sneakers are the modern dress shoe for men who do not work in finance theater. The silhouette that lasts is a court or Achilles shape — low, leather, minimal branding. The adidas Stan Smith is the version that still earns the slot.
What to look for:
- Leather you can clean with a cloth, not a knit that yellows in eight weeks.
- A cupsole that can be resoled or at least worn down slowly.
- A shape that still looks like a shoe next to tailored trousers.
Common Projects are the reference and the tax. Veja, Greats, Koio, and a careful Adidas Samba in white/white will get you most of the way. Avoid chunky “fashion” runners unless you are actually running.
Keep them white. Once a month: eraser, mild soap, patience. Yellowed foam is how a $150 pair becomes a $0 pair. They are a court shoe. Skip them in standing rain, on a trail, or if you wanted a runner.
Merino: the sweater that earns its keep
Cotton sweatshirts pill and bag. Cheap acrylic itches and looks like a hotel gym. Merino sits in the useful middle: temperature-regulating, odor-resistant, thin enough to go under a jacket. An Icebreaker merino crew is the merino that still makes sense under a jacket.
Navy is the color. Grey is fine. Black merino photographs well and looks like a void in daylight. A crewneck, not a shawl collar, because you will actually layer it.
Fit: close in the shoulder, enough room that a shirt collar does not fight it. If the cuff looks like a sausage, size up.
Hand-wash or a wool cycle. Lay flat. This is not high maintenance. This is how the thing still looks like itself next winter. The extra money over a $60 cotton crew is the fiber and the years — not a logo. If that gap does not matter to you, buy the cotton and replace it.
The belt you stop replacing
A bonded-leather belt from a 3-pack is how you get a cracked strap by August. Full-grain leather, 1.25 to 1.5 inches, a simple buckle that does not pretend to be jewelry.
Brown first. Black only if your shoes are black, which, for this closet, they mostly are not.
Match the metal to your watch if you care. If you do not care, pick brass and stop thinking about it. Punch extra holes if you must; better, buy the size that closes on the third hole from the end.

Putting it on
Monday: navy trousers, light blue shirt, merino if the office is cold, white sneakers, brown belt.
Saturday: dark denim, white tee or Oxford, same sneakers, same belt.
That repetition is the feature. People who dress well are often just people who stopped improvising.
When you add something new, it has to replace an item or fill a hole you can name (“rain,” “wedding,” “the gym”). “It was on sale” is not a hole.
What we left out
Boat shoes. Common Projects as the tax on the same court silhouette. Chunky “fashion” runners. A 40-piece mood board. If it does not go with navy, white, brown, and denim, it is a statement — allowed, not the closet.
Pair the closet with the only grooming routine you need and the weekday is mostly handled. What goes in the bag is the same test: everyday carry tech that earns its place.
